Rascal 1993-2007

2 Nov

Hey all, I’ve debated whether or not to post this but in the end I came to the conclusion that Rascal deserves a post in his honour.  I haven’t updated in awhile and it is partly due to an unfortunate event that I have experienced.

This past tuesday night, I arrived home from class to discover Rascal, the cat who has been a member of my family since I was five, laying on my bedroom floor, meowing and unable to move his hind legs.  My mother and I rushed him to the vet’s where we were told that Rascal’s paralysis was due to a blood clot that could have been caused by an underlying heart murmur that we have been aware of for the past few years.  Unfortunately, there is no cure that promised any real amount of success and Rascal was in excruciating pain.  I made the decision to put him to sleep.  It was the most difficult decision I have ever made.  I always knew this day would come but I had thought I would have months or weeks to say goodbye, not hours.

Rascal was a great cat.  He was a cat who loved to cuddle and he was constantly purring.  He was a total charmer as well, some how he’d be able to crawl in bed with you, purring away, and slowly steal your pillow without you noticing until you were left with no pillow.  He made a lot of friends in his life, he loved to visit the neighbours.  He always reminded me of a lion, even the dogs respected him (and they’re are not cat-friendly dogs in anyway)!  Rascal was also a horrible hunter, unlike his little sister Missy.  Obviously, I did not mind this!  I remember once when my sisters and I were small, a duck had waundered on to the front lawn and Rascal came flying out of the house straight for the duck.  Although he managed to grab the poor duck’s neck, Rascal lost the battle.  Let’s just say Rascal greatly underestimated the strength of a duck’s beating wings.

The past few days have been really difficult, I don’t really remember a time where Rascal wasn’t there and seeing him missing from his usual sleeping places is heartbreaking.

I’m so sorry to hear about your kitty. It’s such a blow, especially when you aren’t expecting it. We just had to put our dog Rowdy down earlier this week and I know how rough it is. Hang in there.

I am so sorry to hear about Rowdy, Tamara. I just checked your blog and he was a gorgeous boy. I completely understand what you’re going through, I keep thinking “if I only had more time.” My condolences to your family.

Sorry this didn’t come earlier, but I’m very sorry for your loss. Sometimes losing a pet can be harder than losing a human. My deepest sympathy ❤
